Stone description: A blue or blue-green mineral that is among the first gemstones valued by civilisations worldwide. Its name comes from the French word turquiose – Turkish. Among the best-known deposits today are China, the USA, Congo, Australia and Chile. The first turquoises reached Europe via Turkey from localities in what is now Iran. In terms of composition, turquoise belongs to the phosphate group.
