Stone description: Lapis stands out with its intense blue colour, which it owes to the mineral lazurite. This is also how it got its name – lapis lazuli is an Arabic expression for blue colouring. In classic deposits (for example Badakhshan in Afghanistan) it was mined as early as antiquity. In the past, it was often used to produce the blue pigment ultramarine. In terms of composition, it is a rock whose main component is the mineral lazurite, along with grains of pyrite, calcite and mica.
