Stone description: Sapphire is typically blue, however due to various admixtures it can also be coloured pink, purple or orange. The most common and most popular colour is blue, after which it was also named. Sapphire comes from the Greek word sappheiros or sapphirus, derived from the Hebrew sappire – meaning blue. Sapphire is the second hardest gemstone in the world after diamond. In terms of composition, it is a variety of the mineral corundum.
