Stone description: Amethyst is a purple gem belonging to the quartz family. Its varying intensity of colour is caused by ionizing radiation acting on a small admixture of ferric compounds in the quartz. Amethyst occurs in basalts, where it forms crystal infillings of cavities that can reach considerable sizes. The richest deposits are in Brazil.
