Stone description: A black or black-and-white banded mineral that is rare in nature (localities include India and Brazil). Onyx has a long history and was very popular already in antiquity. It was used to make cameos (small carvings or reliefs in hard material) and intaglios (engraved gems cut into the surface); onyx rings and amulets also served as seals. In terms of chemical composition, onyx is a variety of chalcedony, a general name for fibrous cryptocrystalline quartz.
