Stone Description: A black or black-and-white banded mineral that occurs only rarely in nature (notable localities include India and Brazil). Onyx has a long history and was already highly popular in antiquity. It was used for the production of cameos (small carvings or reliefs in hard material) and intaglios (gems engraved with a motif cut into the surface), while onyx rings and amulets served as seals. In terms of chemical composition, onyx is a variety of chalcedony, which is a general name for fibrous cryptocrystalline quartz.
