Stone description: A black or black-and-white banded mineral that occurs only rarely in nature (its localities include India and Brazil). Onyx has a long history and was very popular already in antiquity. It was used to make cameos (small engravings or reliefs in hard material) and intaglios (gems with a motif carved into depth); rings and amulets made of onyx were also used as seals. In terms of chemical composition, onyx is a variety of chalcedony, which is the general name for fibrous cryptocrystalline quartz.
