Stone description: Obsidian, or volcanic glass, forms in a unique way when hot lava cools rapidly in water or on land, and the process is so fast that individual minerals do not have time to crystallize. Snowflake obsidian is a true rarity. It formed about 2.5 million years ago during a volcanic eruption in the Black Spring area of western Utah, and to this day it is found only in this locality. In appearance, “white snowflakes” of the mineral cristobalite stand out beautifully against its black base. In terms of composition, it is a natural form of silica glass.
