Stone description: Obsidian, or volcanic glass, forms in a unique way when hot lava cools rapidly in water or on land, and the process is so fast that individual minerals do not have time to crystallize. The mahogany variety is a beautiful two-tone brown-and-black obsidian. It formed when two chemically different lavas merged, one of which was richer in ore microlites, iron or manganese – causing the black veining. The stone comes from Mexico.
