Its varying intensity of colour is caused by ionizing radiation acting on a small admixture of ferric compounds in the quartz. Amethyst occurs in basalts, where it forms crystal infillings of cavities that can reach considerable sizes. The richest deposits are in Brazil. This variety is found in the area around the city of Marabá in the state of Paraná. It is a well-known locality that has long supplied the market with high-quality and affordably priced material. Especially smaller stones can reach gemstone quality and are also suitable for faceting.
