These are collector’s pieces, because after Botswana declared independence, the government banned the export of unprocessed rough agates and the embargo continues to this day. Botswana agates are known for their pronounced banding. A sharp contrast between white and dark bands is often complemented by a red centre (coloured by iron oxides), which adds even more dynamism to the overall appearance.
