It is a variety of chalcedony (the general name for fibrous cryptocrystalline quartz), and like most others it comes from Brazil. Brazilian agates are porous and absorb dyes in solutions very well. In this case, the agate was dyed blue-green; during dyeing, the colour is absorbed with different intensity into individual layers, creating beautiful banded patterns on the surface.
