It is a variety of chalcedony (a general term for fibrous cryptocrystalline quartz) which, like most others, originates from Brazil. Brazilian agates are porous and readily absorb dyes in solutions. In this case, the agate has been dyed purple; during the colouring process, the dye penetrates the individual layers with varying intensity, creating beautiful striped patterns on the surface.
